1) If you determine that a virus has infiltrated your computer, you want to make sure it doesn’t spread to other computers or users. Disconnect from the internet and any home or office network.

2) Update your virus scanning software such as Norton or McAfee and scan your computer. If no antivirus software is present, try using a free online virus scanner such as PC Checkup provided by Norton at Symantec.com.

3) Determine the type of virus found. Is it a worm or Trojan virus? Is it removable? Research the virus and follow instructions for removal. If the virus has gotten into your system files, backup your data files, format your drive, and reinstall your operating system and applications.

4) After installing your operating system and updates, install a quality virus scanning software application. Make sure to remember to update the virus definitions and set up to run automatically.

5) Have in place a backup strategy to save those irreplaceable precious photos, hours of downloaded music, documents that you spent countless hours creating, the emails you have saved for years, and the address book you always meant to print out but never did.
